Trump nominee pledges wider short form outreach to counter Chinese propaganda

The nominee said the US Agency for Global Media will prioritize Asia and expand channels while VOA and Radio Free Asia continue Chinese language coverage at reduced levels.

A Trump nominee to lead the US Agency for Global Media pledged to intensify US broadcasting efforts aimed at countering Chinese propaganda. According to SCMP Economy, Sarah B. Rogers told a Senate committee hearing that the agency would broaden its approach with short-form videos, podcasts, and outreach through diaspora group chats.

Rogers said Asia would remain a top regional priority for USAGM, which oversees Voice of America and helps fund Radio Free Asia and other international broadcasters. She also described Chinese adversarial propaganda as an obstacle that should be combated as a core part of US public diplomacy.

The nominee would take over an agency that has already been weakened by previous Trump administration actions. SCMP Economy reported that about 1,000 VOA employees were placed on paid administrative leave, and VOA and Radio Free Asia are still publishing Chinese language coverage, but at reduced levels.

Rogers added that she believes Chinese propaganda increasingly pushes leftist anti-colonial narratives and antisemitism through coordinated automated or semi-automated social media accounts used to spread disinformation, as described in her remarks to the committee.
