Ukraine targets Iranian cargo ships in Caspian Sea amid drone fallout

The move could make Russia-Iran shipping across the Caspian increasingly difficult, according to analysts cited by OilPrice.

Ukraine has carried out a strike in the Caspian Sea against an Iranian cargo ship, framing the action as a response to Iran supplying drones used against Ukrainian forces, according to OilPrice.

The outlet said Russian use of Iranian drone technology has increased drone deployments against Kyiv, and that Ukraine views Iran as an indirect combatant because of the support tied to the Russian war effort.

OilPrice quoted an Russia-Iran expert at Sciences Po saying the developments would make it more difficult for both Iran and Russia, while another Russia expert at the Hudson Institute said the attack signals Ukraine will not tolerate aggression regardless of where it originates.

The report added that such operations may raise the risk profile for shipping links between Russia and Iran across the Caspian, with potential knock-on effects for regional logistics tied to energy and other cargo flows.
