AI can aid trading workflows, but cannot replace trader judgment

Vtrender Technologies’ Shai Coelho says retail traders often lose money because they lack disciplined risk management and a “structure” to interpret expanding signals.

LiveMint Markets spoke with Shai Coelho, director of Vtrender Technologies, who said AI can help trading by processing large amounts of market data, scanning for patterns, summarising conditions, and reducing manual workload.

Coelho argued that AI cannot replace the human judgment needed for trading because success depends on more than pattern recognition, including context, risk, execution, and knowing when not to act. He added that AI improves the workflow, but the decision still requires market understanding and discipline.

He said today’s derivatives market is different from earlier periods when price and volume were often enough, pointing to how options positioning, open interest, expiry behavior, volatility, and order flow shape intraday moves.

Coelho described the market as an auction that has become faster and more sensitive to positioning, and he said traders need structure to filter the noise, using tools such as Market Profile to see where value is accepted or rejected and order flow to gauge participation at specific prices.
