Chinese naval drills near Scarborough Shoal follow Philippines seabed bid
The exercise was staged after Beijing criticized the Philippines over an alleged attempt to expand seabed rights and map claims off Palawan.
The Chinese military staged joint naval and air drills near Scarborough Shoal in the South China Sea, according to reporting from SCMP Economy.
The People’s Liberation Army Southern Theatre Command said the drills were a response to what it called actions by countries in the region that have undermined peace and stability, and it tied the exercise to Beijing’s dispute with Manila over seabed rights and mapping claims.
SCMP Economy also notes that an opinion piece published by PLA Daily urged the force to keep close watch on changes in technology and warfare and to intensify practical, combat oriented training.
