Nathu La border pass reopens for commerce between India and China
The Nathu La Pass in India’s Sikkim and China’s Tibet reopened on Saturday after being closed since 2020, reviving trade for about 600 registered traders.
The SCMP Economy reported that the Nathu La Pass, a high-altitude border trading post linking India’s Sikkim state with China’s Tibet region, reopened to commerce on Saturday for the first time since 2020.
The pass sits at 4,310 metres above sea level and will benefit about 600 registered traders in Sikkim who previously relied on the route for their livelihoods, the outlet said.
SCMP Economy said the reopening follows an agreement signed in 2006 that restored access after the 1962 India-China war, when Nathu La first reopened for the first time in decades.
A field study last year by Sangay Lachenpa of Shiv Nadar University’s Centre of Excellence for Himalayan Studies found that many of the items listed in the 2006 agreement were no longer traded in meaningful quantities, according to the report.
