Hong Kong considers shifting public housing output to a 50:50 rental split

Officials said total public housing supply is set to reach 196,000 flats over the next five years, with the rental-to-subsidised sale mix under review.

Hong Kong authorities are seeking public input on whether to adjust the production mix of public housing, moving toward an even 50:50 split between public rental flats and subsidised sale homes, according to SCMP Economy.

Housing minister Winnie Ho Wing-yin told a planning forum that the total supply of public housing would reach 196,000 flats over the next five years, under measures linked to Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu’s 2024 policy address.

SCMP Economy reported that the Housing Authority is currently aiming to change its output target from a 70:30 rental-to-subsidised sale ratio to 60:40, but Ho said officials are collecting feedback to assess whether the ratio can be adjusted further to 50:50.

Ho said the previous 70:30 approach was used to clear the long waiting queue for public rental housing as quickly as possible, while authorities now weigh whether a different split better matches demand.
