Xi awards first-class merit to naval test pilot Yang Yong

State broadcaster CCTV aired a documentary about Yang Yong’s cabin pressure incident, including a 13-minute period holding altitude due to a civilian flight path below.

SCMP Economy reports that Chinese President Xi Jinping has awarded veteran naval test pilot Yang Yong a first-class merit award for defence science and technology.

The story says Yang appeared in a CCTV documentary this week and was previously recognized with seven second- and third-class merit awards.

According to SCMP Economy, the documentary detailed a life-threatening event in which Yang’s plane lost pressure at an altitude of 10,000 metres after a cabin leak.

SCMP Economy adds that Yang said he had to maintain his course and altitude for 13 minutes because a civilian flight path lay directly below, until he could descend and land.
