At least 72 die in Ceuta migrant rush as crossings top 50,000

Spanish authorities said more than 1,000 people have been treated by health services since Thursday as over 48,000 migrants returned to Morocco within 48 hours.

The death toll from a mass rush into Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta from Morocco has reached at least 72, Reuters reported, after five more bodies were found along Ceuta’s coast.

Authorities said more than 50,000 people crossed into Ceuta by land and sea in an unprecedented surge that began on Thursday at one of the European Union’s only two land borders with Africa, prompting alarm across the bloc.

Spanish authorities said more than 48,000 people returned to Morocco within 48 hours, and additional returns continued over the weekend.

Spanish government representative in Ceuta Miguel Angel Perez said more than 1,000 people had been treated by health services since Thursday, and he noted that some migrants drowned or were crushed while trying to climb a breakwater and border fence, with many driven by economic hardship and encouraged by social media rumors.
