Hong Kong to launch first yuan five-year bond futures on Monday
Hong Kong’s chief executive met China’s securities regulator ahead of the debut, framing the product as an offshore risk management tool to support long-term holdings of Chinese treasury bonds.
Hong Kong’s Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu met with China Securities Regulatory Commission chairman Wu Qing to discuss deepening links between Hong Kong’s and mainland China’s financial markets ahead of the debut of China’s first yuan-denominated five-year bond futures in Hong Kong.
The launch on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange is scheduled for Monday, following the high-level meeting held at Government House in Central with a CSRC delegation, according to SCMP Economy.
Lee said the new contract would offer an effective offshore risk management tool and is intended to attract international investors to the mainland bond market, including those looking to hold Chinese treasury bonds on a long-term basis.
He also described the move as a key step in enhancing the RMB product ecosystem and consolidating Hong Kong’s role as an offshore RMB business hub, with Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po, the SFC chairman, and the SFC chief executive present.
