Analyst says China’s military modernization is accelerating rapidly
The analyst said the pace of modernization has widened gaps with other countries and increased regional anxiety as China assumes a larger role.
South China Morning Post Economy spoke with analyst Lyle Goldstein, who described China’s People’s Liberation Army modernization as making “tremendous progress” over the past decade, with momentum that has picked up significantly.
Goldstein said the scale and pace of China’s military build-up could be unprecedented, arguing it aligns with China’s stated goal of becoming a world leading, world class force.
He noted that differences with other countries are growing, and that this has created fear that is felt across the region, where there is palpable anxiety about where events are headed.
The analyst said the shift reflects a changing balance as the United States plays a smaller role while China plays a larger one.
