Australia regulator seeks tougher emissions reporting for LNG projects
The Northern Territory Environment Protection Authority recommends up to 23 changes after Inpex revised Ichthys LNG 2023 to 2024 emissions estimates upward, including benzene, and concerns rose over potential health impacts.
Australia's Northern Territory Environment Protection Authority has recommended tougher environmental and pollution reporting requirements for two major LNG projects, the Ichthys LNG facility operated by Inpex and the Darwin LNG project led by Santos, according to OilPrice.
The regulator published the outcome of a review of the Darwin Airshed LNG licenses after an increase in Inpex's 2023 to 2024 emissions estimates, which included benzene, triggered community concern. In October 2025, Inpex revised its emissions estimates upward following a review of its estimation methods, and later reported discrepancies between emissions reported and actual emissions, including volatile organic compounds such as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene.
As a result of that upward revision, the NT EPA opened its own review and produced as many as 23 recommendations for the Darwin Airshed and the licenses tied to both LNG projects. OilPrice also notes that the recommendations include applying numerical controls, a response aimed at addressing the earlier under-reporting of emissions identified by the regulator.
