EU grain output forecast falls 8% for 2026-27 as weather bites
The forecast points to lower planted area from high fertilizer and fuel prices, with EU grain production expected at 266 million tonnes.
Below-average grain production is forecast for the European Union in the 2026-27 marketing year after unfavorable weather hit major producing countries, according to a Foreign Agricultural Service report cited by World Grain, part of the US Department of Agriculture.
The FAS expects EU total grain output to drop 8% year on year to 266 million tonnes, down from 289.18 million tonnes in 2025-26, driven by sharp yield declines in countries including France, Hungary, Poland and Germany.
World Grain reports the decline is linked to both weather and economics, with lower planted area tied to rising input costs and higher fertilizer and fuel prices, along with drought concerns.
The FAS also projected corn output at 52.5 million tonnes, and warned EU grain imports would rise from 26.5 million tonnes in 2025-26 to 28.4 million tonnes in 2026-27, citing the need for corn imports from Ukraine, the United States, Brazil and Canada.
