Guardian expands API integrations with Rippling for benefits administration
The carrier added Member Eligibility and Policy APIs, a change that makes it harder for brokers to compare carriers using broad “first” integration claims.
Guardian Life Insurance Company of America has expanded its API integration with workforce management platform Rippling, adding Member Eligibility and Policy APIs and positioning itself as the first carrier to offer both types of connections with Rippling, according to Insurance Business.
The story notes that “first” claims may be less meaningful as carriers roll out integrations to different HR and enrollment platforms at different stages. Mutual of Omaha, for example, has been building its own API connections across ADP, Employee Navigator, bSwift, and PlanSource, with plan setup supported on some platforms and evidence of insurability on others, while enrollment support is planned later this year on ADP and Employee Navigator, with Workday integrations reportedly next.
Insurance Business also highlights that Rippling recently formalized a Preferred Carrier Program with Guardian, MetLife, and Unum, with direct integrations co-developed around shared service standards. However, what remains unclear is how the detailed scope of MetLife and Unum connections compares with Guardian’s, including whether they cover the same member eligibility and policy data fields automatically.
For brokers, the article argues the key question is not just whether a carrier integrates with a client’s HRIS, but which specific fields update automatically, such as eligibility, policy data, or evidence of insurability, and what still requires manual handling. It ties the growing focus on automation to broader demand, citing a projection that the benefits administration sector could reach $144.7 billion by 2028 as large employers move from manual processes to self service portals and automated eligibility management.
