Spain denies intelligence warning was missed in Ceuta migration crisis
Spain’s interior ministry said 72 bodies have been recovered in Ceuta so far as authorities continue accommodation and repatriation efforts.
Spain’s government has rejected claims it ignored warnings from its intelligence service, the Centro Nacional de Inteligencia (CNI), about a mass migrant arrival in Ceuta, a Spanish territory in North Africa, according to SCMP Economy.
Madrid said it received no intelligence reports warning of a migration crisis on the scale that unfolded, while the opposition People’s Party spokesman Miguel Tellado questioned the idea that the CNI knew nothing of an impending “human wave.”
Authorities said efforts in Ceuta are continuing to accommodate and repatriate remaining migrants, along with searches for additional fatalities. Spain’s Ministry of the Interior reported that 72 bodies have been recovered so far.
SCMP Economy reported that tens of thousands entered Ceuta irregularly from Morocco last week, most by swimming and others by climbing over the territory’s 6-metre-high border fence, with the exact total still unclear.
