UCLA marmot researchers launch OnlyFans, meme coins appear on Solana
The OnlyMarms account has generated about $4,000 so far, while UCLA says it needs $75,000 to $100,000 annually to fund graduate students and fieldwork.
UCLA researchers running a decades-long yellow-bellied marmot study have turned to OnlyFans to help cover funding gaps, launching an account called OnlyMarms after traditional research financing became harder to secure, according to Decrypt.
The team says the project has tracked marmots in Colorado since 1962 and that the OnlyMarms effort has generated about $4,000 so far. UCLA professor Daniel Blumstein said the idea came as research funding dwindled, and he described the subscription page as a way to reach a different audience for science communication.
Blumstein told NPR the account ultimately needs between $75,000 and $100,000 per year to support graduate students and fieldwork, funding that federal grants once provided. He also said the researchers have not created any related tokens, but they have benefited when people created and sent meme coin transactions tied to the project.
On Solana, more than 10 OnlyMarms-inspired meme coins have appeared on Pump.fun, where Blumstein said the team can register the transactions to receive fees. Decrypt also notes this follows a precedent from 2024, when a Solana meme token based on the viral pygmy hippo Moo Deng briefly reached a market capitalization of about $680 million.
