Ariel Focus Fund highlights Barrick as gold asset spin-off plan advances
The fund fell 2.1% in Q2 2026, with weaker gold mining holding Barrick cited alongside a drag from gold sentiment.
Ariel Investments highlighted Barrick Mining in its Ariel Focus Fund Q2 2026 investor letter, noting the company is preparing a spin-off of its North American gold assets. The letter also frames Barrick within the fund’s broader assessment of holdings during a quarter that saw U.S. stocks rally.
According to Yahoo Finance, the Ariel Focus Fund returned 2.14% in the second quarter of 2026, trailing the Russell 1000 Value and the S&P 500, which gained 13.87% and 15.20% respectively. Ariel said results benefited from gains in some holdings, but weaker performance in areas including energy, consumer healthcare, and gold mining weighed on the fund.
Barrick’s stock context was also provided, with its one-month return at -3.62% and a 52-week trading range of $21.60 to $54.69. The report said Barrick closed on July 31, 2026 at about $52.75 per share, valuing the company at roughly $86.205 billion.
On performance drivers, Yahoo Finance said Barrick declined during the quarter as macro headwinds pressured gold-focused sentiment. It attributed gold price weakness to a stronger U.S. dollar and shifting expectations for rate cuts, while management beat earnings expectations, reaffirmed full-year guidance, and described a favorable long-term production outlook for gold and copper, alongside continued dividends and buybacks.
