Boltz shuts down Bitcoin swaps after AI-assisted probing outpaced defenses

Boltz said its swap service will stay offline until further notice even though its non-custodial design protected users during months of attacks and contained exploits.

Crypto bridge Boltz shut down its Bitcoin swap service after an AI-assisted probing campaign accelerated faster than the team could validate and patch vulnerabilities, according to the company’s Aug. 3 post.

Boltz said the automated, AI-assisted activity initially led to several contained exploits, and that its non-custodial design kept users in control of their coins through the bridging process. The service also included a built-in refund path if problems occurred before settlement, which Boltz said protected user balances. However, Boltz said it could not keep the swap business operating safely and would keep swaps offline until further notice, adding that the company absorbed losses from the exploits on its own books.

In the post, Boltz framed the situation as a defensive bottleneck, saying attackers can automate parts of the discovery and exploitation cycle while defenders must confirm findings, assess severity, build and test fixes, and ensure changes do not break other systems. It argued that smaller teams may struggle to validate and patch at the pace attackers can find and exploit weaknesses.

Boltz also pointed to broader industry and government moves on AI-driven cyber operations, including references to Google’s description of automated triage, Anthropic’s analysis of AI-enabled cyber activity, and CISA guidance that suggested the most risky vulnerabilities could be moved into patch windows measured in days. It added that the Open Source Security Foundation is building tools to triage and validate issues.
