Bowhead Specialty profit rises 35% in H1 2026 on premium growth

H1 2026 gross written premiums increased 26.4% to $514.6 million, and the combined ratio improved to 95.6 from 96.9.

Bowhead Specialty reported H1 2026 net income of $32.1 million, up 35.3% from $23.8 million in the first half of 2025, driven by higher premiums and sustained underwriting profitability, according to Reinsurance News.

In the opening half of 2026, gross written premiums rose 26.4% year over year to $514.6 million, while net written premiums grew 21.0% to $321.4 million. Net earned premiums increased 22.6% to $280.8 million, helping total revenues rise 24.8% to $319.6 million.

The company also reported net investment income up 40.4% to $36.8 million, with the combined ratio improving to 95.6 from 96.9 in H1 2025. In Q2 2026, Bowhead posted net income of $16.1 million, up 30.8%, as gross written premiums climbed 28.2% to $297.9 million and the combined ratio improved to 95.9 from 96.8.

Reinsurance News also notes that American Family Mutual Insurance Company, S.I. and its affiliates have entered into a definitive agreement to acquire all remaining outstanding Bowhead common stock in an all-cash transaction valuing the specialty insurer at approximately $1.2 billion. Bowhead CEO Stephen Sills said the deal reflects the strength of Bowhead’s franchise and that he believes it delivers value to stockholders.
