Coldcard wallet theft exceeds $100M as Galaxy tracks 3 attack waves
Galaxy Research estimates the confirmed total is 1,596 Bitcoin, or over $100 million, and warns a suspected fourth wave could raise losses to about 2,055 BTC.
Coldcard wallet theft linked to a vulnerability has surpassed $100 million, with Galaxy Research saying 1,596 Bitcoin was stolen across three confirmed attack waves affecting roughly 7,300 addresses.
According to Galaxy, victim reports it received included confirmation of the first three major attacks, and the group also identified 14 smaller incidents, which it characterized as additional footprints potentially tied to opportunistic attackers.
Galaxy Research said it is also investigating a suspected fourth wave that could lift total losses to 2,055 BTC, worth about $130 million, but it has not included that event in its confirmed estimate because it has not yet received victim confirmation.
Galaxy added that 90% of the stolen Bitcoin had not been moved, and it said attacker and victim addresses were shared with US federal law enforcement, crypto exchanges, and cyber investigation companies, while warning attacks were ongoing.
