Germany energy demand declines as oil and gas prices weigh on use
Germanys energy demand fell 1.9% in the first half, while oil product consumption dropped 8%, with diesel down by close to 6%.
Germanys energy demand declined by 1.9% over the first half of the year, as surging oil and gas prices reduced consumption, according to preliminary data from the Working Group on Energy Balances (AGEB), an association of German economic and energy organizations, reported by OilPrice.
Oil product consumption fell 8% in the period, with diesel use down by close to 6%. Gasoline consumption also declined, down 0.6%, while jet fuel consumption fell 1% and light heating oil demand dropped by more than 30%.
At the same time, coal consumption rose 7% and natural gas consumption increased 1.3%, as hydrocarbons accounted for 75.9% of Germanys energy consumption over the first half.
The mix shifted toward renewables, with wind and solar generation growing, helping them reach 22.2% of overall energy consumption, up from 20.9% a year earlier. OilPrice also noted that hydropower, wind, and solar together made up 58% of electricity generation in the first half, with hydro down 7.7%.
