Jardine Matheson ends Oxford and Cambridge undergraduate scholarships

The final Oxbridge undergraduate cohort is students starting their studies later this year, as the Jardine Foundation ends the 44-year program.

Hong Kong conglomerate Jardine Matheson said it is ending a long running undergraduate scholarship programme for Oxford and Cambridge, operated through the Jardine Foundation, its education trust. Students starting their studies later this year will be the final cohort covered by the programme.

The company told the South China Morning Post that the change is aimed at increasing its focus and commitment on the Asian market. Jardine Matheson said it made the decision to maximize impact for the greatest number of students and that the foundation is prioritizing impact in the communities where its businesses operate.

The move marks the end of an undergraduate scholarship programme that has operated for 44 years. A former scholarship recipient described the opportunity as life changing, according to the outlet.
