Jim Cramer says he is selling his Bitcoin over quantum cryptography fears
Cramer’s decision follows an IBM and University of Chicago demonstration of verified quantum advantage reported on July 30, and he says quantum-enabled codebreaking could arrive in three to four years.
Decrypt reports that CNBC host Jim Cramer said on air he is selling his Bitcoin, citing concerns about a coming quantum computing threat to the cryptography that secures crypto assets.
The outlet ties the warning to a July 30 demonstration by IBM and the University of Chicago showing verified quantum advantage, which traders discussed as a potential timeline for when quantum systems could break current cryptographic protections.
During a late-week interview with IBM CEO Arvind Krishna, Cramer asked whether quantum computers could steal coins and said he is taking the risk seriously, with Krishna advising him to be more “paranoid” about crypto cryptography within three to four years.
Decrypt also notes that traders have long leaned on an “Inverse Cramer” pattern, and it references that a related Inverse Cramer Tracker ETF launched by Tuttle Capital in 2023 eventually closed, with the short version shutting in February 2024 after holding $2 million in assets.
