Mathematician Yurii Nesterov joins CUHK-Shenzhen after Gauss Prize

He received the Carl Friedrich Gauss Prize at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Philadelphia on July 23.

Yurii Nesterov, a Russian-born Belgian mathematician, has begun a new full-time role in southern China after reaching retirement age in 2023, joining CUHK-Shenzhen and the Shenzhen Loop Area Institute as a professor at the Centre for AI Theoretical Foundation and Systems, according to SCMP Economy.

Nesterov, 70, moved into the position in June, linking his work to China’s expanding AI research ecosystem, the outlet reported.

In late July, he was recognized with the Carl Friedrich Gauss Prize, the top honor in the global applied mathematics community, which he received at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Philadelphia on July 23.

SCMP Economy also cited Nesterov describing China’s main feature as the fast and progressive development, in remarks included with the prize and move.
