Scoular to expand soybean processing with new Ohio dehulling plant
Scoular expects the Covington facility to be operating by mid-2027, and the expansion is aimed at supporting growing supply for food and beverage customers, including plant-based drinks.
Scoular plans to invest in a soybean dehulling facility at its Covington, Ohio site to support growth among food and beverage customers, using existing cleaning and color-sorting equipment at the location, World Grain reports. The company said the upgrade also is expected to create additional opportunities for producers supplying identity-preserved, non-GMO and organic soybeans to the plant.
Scoular expects the Covington dehuller to be operating by mid-2027. The company linked the project to longer-term relationships with customers and producers, noting that demand for reliable, high-quality dehulled soybeans is rising.
The new facility will become Scoular’s second dehulling operation, after the firm added a dehulling line at its Andres, Illinois facility in 2023. Dehulled soybeans are used in a range of plant-based foods and beverages, including soy milk, and manufacturers often favor them for higher protein concentration and faster water absorption.
Scoular also cited continued growth in global consumer demand for plant-based beverages, saying projected annual increases are nearly 14% through 2032, according to statements cited by World Grain. The Omaha, Nebraska-based agribusiness describes itself as an employee-owned $7.3 billion company serving farmers, grain processors, biofuel producers, and food manufacturers, among other customers.
