US Army stockpile of long-range precision missiles reportedly depleted in Iran war
The shortages could affect readiness for future conflicts, and analysts say both ATACMS and PrSM would matter in a possible fight involving China.
The US Army has reportedly used up much of its stockpile of highly accurate long-range missiles during a five-month war with Iran, according to three people familiar with the data, as cited by SCMP Economy.
The missiles cited include Army Tactical Missile Systems, or ATACMS, and Precision Strike Missiles, or PrSM. The long-range munitions are designed to enable precise strikes from a safer distance, and ATACMS has reportedly played a key role in the war in Ukraine by helping Ukrainian forces hit targets inside Russia.
SCMP Economy also notes that PrSM is a newer, more advanced generation intended to replace ATACMS, which has a shorter range. Analysts quoted in the account estimate the weapons cost more than US$1 million each, and they say such systems would likely be important in any conflict with China.
