Alimentation Couche-Tard targets $8.6B Żabka buy to expand Europe footprint

The acquisition would add Żabka’s 13,000 stores across Poland and Romania, while Couche-Tard says Żabka’s food, beverages, and digital capabilities could support its Core + More strategy.

Alimentation Couche-Tard said it plans to buy Żabka, Poland’s largest convenience retailer, in a deal valued at about $8.6 billion, setting up a major step in its regional growth.

If the transaction closes, the combined company would gain Żabka’s 13,000 stores in Poland and Romania, strengthening Couche-Tard’s presence in the convenience market across the region.

C-Store Dive reports that Couche-Tard also sees strategic value in what runs inside Żabka’s stores, pointing to its Core + More strategy unveiled earlier this year and calling Żabka a leader in areas including food, digital engagement, supply chain, and store innovation.

In remarks shared with investors, Couche-Tard president and CEO Alex Miller said the retailer’s quick serve meal mix is notably food-heavy, noting that one in every five Żabka transactions includes a quick serve meal, and highlighted Żabka’s emphasis on beverages and warm snacks.
