ANA flight avoids collision with inspection aircraft at Tokyo Haneda
The Boeing 767 from Shanghai with 197 people landed safely at around 6:10am after its TCAS was triggered, while Japan’s transport ministry investigated the near miss.
An All Nippon Airways passenger jet avoided a potential midair collision with a government inspection aircraft near Tokyo’s Haneda airport on Tuesday, marking another aviation safety incident at the facility since a deadly runway collision in 2024, according to Japanese media and statements cited by the SCMP Economy.
SCMP Economy reports that ANA flight NH968 from Shanghai was approaching the airport at around 6am when its traffic collision avoidance system, TCAS, activated with a warning of collision risk. The Boeing 767 was descending toward runway C when pilots followed the TCAS instructions and climbed to avoid the other aircraft, it said.
The aircraft landed safely at around 6:10am, with no passengers or crew members reported injured. SCMP Economy also said the other aircraft was a Civil Aviation Bureau-operated flight inspection plane, known as Dr White, conducting checks on navigation and airport facilities.
SCMP Economy reports that the inspection aircraft took off from runway D, then turned after takeoff and crossed the flight path of the descending ANA plane. The airline said there had been no imminent risk of collision and that it reported the incident to the ministry, which is investigating.
