China sentences retired defence technology official to 10 years
The Dazhou court said the case involved more than 43 million yuan in bribes and alleged improper influence tied to approvals and investment.
China has sentenced Zhang Jianhua, a former senior defence technology official, to 10 years in prison for allegedly accepting more than 43 million yuan in bribes, as the country’s anti-corruption campaign continues targeting the military sector, according to SCMP Economy. SCMP Economy reported that the Dazhou Intermediate People’s Court in Sichuan province found Zhang accepted 43.38 million yuan in cash and valuables between 2008 and last year. Prosecutors said he used his leadership roles at the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defence to help third parties with approvals and investment. Zhang previously headed the administration’s finance and audit department and served as chief engineer and deputy director, roles cited in the case. SCMP Economy also said the court found he was guilty of directly accepting bribes and taking bribes through the exercise of influence, describing the payments as particularly large sums. After retiring in 2021, SCMP Economy reported that Zhang netted 11.7 million yuan from illicit earnings and allegedly continued using his influence to help others obtain improper gains in business operations and project contracting.
