Drone found near Ukraine-flagged cargo plane at Leipzig airport
Air traffic disruptions included diversions, with the northern part resuming about two hours later and the southern runway staying closed.
A DHL cargo plane was forced to make an emergency landing after it collided with an unknown object while climbing away from Leipzig-Halle airport in Germany, and authorities later found a drone on the ground, the Guardian Business reports.
The Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation said the DHL aircraft hit something above the airport before landing safely in Hanover, with minor damage to the nose section reported by Bild.
Separately overnight, a drone was spotted near a Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft at Leipzig, according to a NATO spokesperson cited by German news agency DPA, who pointed to security sources saying the drone was fitted with explosives and a detonator.
Several aircraft were diverted, operations in the northern part of the airport resumed about two hours later, and the southern runway where the drone was found remained closed, as police used a bomb disposal robot and investigated whether the incidents were linked.
