Ghost jobs and ghosting erode hiring trust, report finds

Resume Genius says 86.0% of employers have ghosted candidates due to high applicant volume, up from 79.0% in 2024.

The recruitment process in 2026 is facing a growing trust problem as employers admit to ghosting candidates and posting listings they do not plan to fill immediately, according to a report from Resume Genius, cited by Insurance Business.

Resume Genius found that 86.0% of employers have ghosted a candidate because they had too many applicants to respond to, up from 79.0% in 2024. The report also attributed ghosting to indecision at 86.0% of employers and to salary expectations being above budget constraints at 82.0%.

The report says misleading job practices are also widespread, with 90.0% of hiring managers intentionally posting ghost jobs or listings they do not plan to fill right away. It added that 64.0% of hiring managers have misrepresented some aspect of a role during hiring, including how difficult the role or team environment is for 32.0%, and the hiring timeline for 29.0%.

Insurance Business notes that Resume Genius argued ghosting is not a fair excuse even amid AI-driven application surges, pointing to potential reputational impacts. Other organizations cited in the story warned that ghost jobs and misleading postings can reduce the quality of applicants, frustrate candidates, and create legal and retention risks, emphasizing clearer job descriptions.
