Hong Kong college apologises after admission email sent to 11,139 applicants
The mistaken message went to all applicants and asked them to pay an acceptance fee, the school said, after a planned email to only accepted students was sent due to human error.
Tung Wah College in Hong Kong has apologised after sending an email that incorrectly told 11,139 tertiary applicants they had been admitted and asked them to pay an acceptance fee, according to the South China Morning Post.
The error occurred on Wednesday and followed allocation results for applicants using the Joint University Programmes Admissions System, known as Jupas, which released results on Wednesday morning.
The outlet reports the college said a spokeswoman confirmed the message was intended for Jupas applicants already accepted by the college, reminding them to confirm acceptance and pay the deposit before a deadline.
The college said it had set up a crisis management team to address the incident after the administrative oversight briefly raised applicants expectations, according to the report.
