Hong Kong fatal traffic accidents up 44% in first half of 2026

Police said 59 fatal crashes occurred in the first half of 2026, with deaths rising to 63 as injuries fell 17% to 7,341 cases.

Hong Kong recorded a 44.0% year-over-year increase in fatal traffic accidents in the first half of 2026, according to police, with 59 fatal crashes and 63 deaths.

Authorities also reported that injury crashes fell 17.0% to 7,341 cases, while the number of injured people declined 20.0% to 9,055.

Police said 41 of the 59 fatal cases involved commercial vehicles, and that 39.0% of those commercial-vehicle drivers were aged 65 or above. The force cited inattentive driving as the main cause, along with some incidents linked to drivers physical conditions.

Police backed a proposed legislative change to tighten driver health checks for commercial drivers by lowering the age threshold for mandatory medical certification from 70 to 65, citing population ageing and the likelihood of more older drivers on the road, according to SCMP Economy.
