Japan’s Trusco Nakayama sells human-sized cooling booths
The Do Hiemon Box, priced at about 1.5 million yen, is designed to hold 15°C and deliver 5°C cooling air to help prevent heat-related conditions.
Japan’s Trusco Nakayama has started selling an oversized refrigerator-style cooling booth, designed to be big enough for a person to sit inside during extreme heat. The product, called the Do Hiemon Box, is priced at about 1.5 million yen, or roughly US$9,500, and keeps the temperature at about 15°C while blowing jets of 5°C air once someone sits inside.
According to SCMP Economy, the company has sold about 200 of the booths since it launched earlier this year to customers including steel mills, construction sites, golf courses, universities and leisure facilities.
The push comes as Japan’s summer weather has become hotter and more humid, with temperatures regularly exceeding 35°C. The weather agency has introduced new terminology for scorching days, and NHK has warned viewers about heatstroke risk.
SCMP Economy added that the booth’s concept is focused on quick relief, rather than creating a lounge, with the goal of helping prevent heat-related conditions from becoming more severe, according to Trusco product division general manager Fumiaki Matsubara.
