Suvarnabhumi Airport apologises after staff gesture sparks backlash

The airport said disciplinary action was taken against the guard involved, after fans of a Chinese celebrity breached boarding procedures and disrupted staff during document checks.

Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport has apologised for “inappropriate behaviour” after backlash over a staff member making a slant-eyed gesture toward reportedly disruptive Chinese nationals, according to SCMP Economy.

The outlet reports the apology followed Thai authorities’ stance that individual clashes would not harm bilateral relations, and that airport management said it regretted the inappropriate behaviour and expressions of the personnel concerned.

Suvarnabhumi said the incident occurred at around 11pm last Wednesday during a situation involving fans of a Chinese celebrity taking a Beijing-bound flight. The airport stated that the fans breached boarding area procedures, refused to cooperate with ticket and document checks, and were denied boarding due to continuous disruptions.

The airport added that ten fans later refused to offload their luggage and engaged in provocative behaviour toward staff during operations, and it said disciplinary action had been taken against the guard involved.
