VYRD seeks $167,493.36 from LG over alleged washer leak damage

The insurer says the leaking washer caused significant damage after a July 12, 2024 incident and that it traced the leak to an alleged defect in the machine.

VYRD Insurance Company filed a lawsuit in Florida state court against LG Electronics U.S.A. seeking to recover $167,493.36 it paid on a homeowners water-damage claim, alleging the loss was caused by a washing machine that leaked during normal use, according to Insurance Business.

The complaint says the insured bought the LG washer in April 2022 and that on July 12, 2024 the machine was running normally when it leaked, causing significant damage to the home. VYRD alleges a later investigation traced the leak to a defect and that the company paid the amount under the homeowners policy to repair, replace, or restore the property to its pre-loss condition.

VYRD is pursuing the claim through subrogation, seeking full reimbursement of $167,493.36, plus pre-judgment interest and court costs. The suit includes a single count of strict products liability, with the complaint alleging the machine was unsafe for intended use, including claims that its factory-installed water lines were not adequately installed and could separate from their connections.

The case was moved to the US District Court for the Middle District of Florida after LG removed it, citing diversity of citizenship, per the filing details described by Insurance Business. LG also said in its notice that VYRD is a Florida corporation and that LG is a New Jersey corporation.
