Bitcoin developers report 85 critical bugs in an AI-assisted audit

The volunteer team filed 4,962 findings across 390 bitcoin projects in 24 hours, with many reports verified and reproduced before being sent to maintainers.

A volunteer group of Bitcoin developers says it used AI tools to scan bitcoin wallets, cryptographic libraries, and related infrastructure, filing 4,962 security vulnerabilities across 390 projects in a 24 hour coordinated audit, according to CoinDesk.

The audit identified 85 critical bugs and 635 high severity issues, and the volume is reportedly overwhelming maintainers as the ecosystem absorbs the fallout from newly surfaced flaws.

CoinDesk reports that the pseudonymous developer behind the Cashu ecash protocol, Calle, said most of the critical reports have been quickly verified by project owners, with working proof of concept reproductions produced in local test environments before submission.

Rob Hamilton, who built the automated setup, said in an X post that the bottleneck is less about finding bugs than coordinating routing them to the right maintainers, describing the effort as an initial version.
