Canaan opens crypto-linked buyback funding channel under SEC filing
The new authorization follows a buyback that used about $2 million to repurchase roughly 2.8 million ADSs by May 19, with remaining unused capacity left unspecified.
Canaan has added a crypto-linked funding channel for its share buyback program, according to an Aug. 4 SEC-filed announcement covered by CryptoSlate. The company said it can sell part of its digital-asset treasury to fund repurchases, while the filing does not indicate whether any transactions have already occurred or how much buyback capacity remains available based on newer totals.
CryptoSlate reports the buyback program started Dec. 12, 2025, with a 12-month ceiling of $30 million for ADS or Class A ordinary share repurchases. By May 19, Canaan had spent about $2 million to buy back approximately 2.8 million ADSs, implying nominal remaining authorization of roughly $28 million as of that date, though the Aug. 4 release did not update the newer repurchase figure.
The same coverage notes the tradeoff for investors is liquidity and reserve size, because drawing on crypto proceeds would reduce the reserve supporting Canaan's loss-making Bitcoin mining and hardware operations. Canaan also has reported holding levels and liabilities that complicate any simple reading of how much of its digital assets are immediately usable.
CryptoSlate further points to Canaan's reported financial and balance-sheet context, including a first-quarter gross loss of $22.9 million, an operating loss of $54.3 million, and net loss of $88.7 million. On the balance sheet, the company previously reported March 31 cash of $43.5 million versus $106.4 million in current liabilities, and June 30 holdings of 1,915 BTC and 3,952 ETH, with restrictions such as pledged BTC for secured term loans and amounts placed in fixed-term products noted as potentially affecting available liquidity.
