China drives record 2025 global nuclear power generation

Worldwide nuclear output rose to 2,845 terawatt-hours in 2025, with China contributing more than 34 terawatt-hours of the increase.

Global nuclear power generation hit an all time high in 2025, reaching 2,845 terawatt-hours worldwide, according to the Statistical Review of World Energy, published in OilPrice.

The increase was modest year over year, up 30 terawatt-hours, or 1.3%, from 2024, and China accounted for more than the net growth, increasing output by more than 34 terawatt-hours.

OilPrice notes that without China, global nuclear generation would have declined, highlighting how the expansion remains concentrated even as output rises.

The United States continues to operate the world’s largest nuclear fleet, while Japan is gradually restoring generation and much of Europe remains below its decade ago levels, the outlet added.
