DeepMind chief executive steps down, senior reshuffle at Google AI

Alphabet shares closed down 4% on Wednesday as Sir Demis Hassabis shifted to chair and chief scientist roles, while other senior leaders prepare to leave for a new startup.

Sir Demis Hassabis will step down as chief executive of Google DeepMind in a leadership overhaul of the UK-based AI research lab, moving into the roles of chair of DeepMind and chief scientist at Alphabet, Google’s parent company, according to the Guardian Business.

DeepMind will be led by Koray Kavukcuoglu, its chief technology officer, under the title of senior vice-president. Hassabis, 50, co-founded DeepMind in 2010 and later sold it to Google for £400 million, and his work has been linked to DeepMind’s AlphaFold model.

The reshuffle also includes departures from Google. Several leaders involved with the Gemini model, including engineer Jeff Dean, are leaving, and Hassabis and Sanjay Ghemawat are among those launching a startup called Discovery Loop focused on research into breakthroughs in machine learning, science, and engineering.

The article says Alphabet, a $4.4 trillion company, closed down 4% on Wednesday. Hassabis said he has been working toward artificial general intelligence, which he described as close at hand, and he will remain chief executive of Isomorphic Labs, a drug discovery company spun out of DeepMind.
