Hong Kong hackathon team wins with Iron Bestie makeup robot arm

The system combines vision-language and voice recognition, can recognize products on a table, and applies them based on a user’s calendar while using local redaction to protect personal data.

An Iron Bestie makeup robot arm won top honours at what organisers described as Hong Kong’s first physical artificial intelligence hackathon, beating more than 160 global competitors in a 48-hour hardware and software sprint, according to SCMP Economy.

SCMP Economy said the personalised assistant uses vision-language models and voice recognition to identify makeup on a table, select products using a user’s calendar, and apply them directly to a person’s face.

To address privacy, the team deployed local redaction middleware to keep sensitive user data private, the outlet reported.

The winning team included City University of Hong Kong graduate Luo Yuqing, who said she had no formal coding background and began tinkering with AI about a year ago, and Southern University of Science and Technology in Shenzhen senior algorithm developer Zeng Yitao.
