Jakarta installs extra barriers ahead of Independence Day amid misinformation fears
Indonesia’s security minister said there would be no compromise on public safety after viral posts raised concerns about the Aug. 17 celebrations.
South China Morning Post reports Indonesia is trying to calm security concerns ahead of its 81st Independence Day, after viral social media posts sparked speculation about potential disruption in Jakarta.
Some shopping centres and office complexes in the capital reportedly installed additional safety barriers last week, prompting Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung to call on establishments to remove the barricades and to say the city remains peaceful.
SCMP also reports that Indonesia’s Security Minister Djamari Chaniago, alongside the military and national police chiefs, said there would be no compromise on public safety and that the domestic situation remains secure and fully under control.
