BNY and BlackRock route institutional staking through Galaxy

Galaxy is an approved Ethereum validator for BlackRock's iShares Staked Ethereum Trust, where the prospectus says the fund can stake 70% to 95% of holdings under normal conditions.

BNY's Digital Asset Custody platform plans to provide institutional crypto staking support using Galaxy’s infrastructure, the firms said Aug. 4. The setup extends a similar reliance at multiple points in the staking stack, including for Ethereum and other proof-of-stake networks.

Galaxy is one of three validator firms approved to stake Ethereum for BlackRock's iShares Staked Ethereum Trust, ETHB. The trust prospectus states ETHB can stake 70% to 95% of its holdings under normal conditions, with ETH held by the trust and staking rewards collected by shareholders.

Under the arrangement, BNY’s custodian holds the private keys and controls withdrawals, while Galaxy and other approved validators hold validator keys and perform validation work. CryptoSlate also notes that while validators do not gain the keys needed to move the trust’s staked ETH, the product sponsor and custodian determine key operational authorities, meaning the economic exposure holder does not directly control validator behavior once it is running.

The article further says that Ethereum finality can be affected if a sufficiently large portion of staked ETH is controlled by validators that go offline or attest incorrectly, with documentation cited that above 33% can prevent finalization and above 66% can finalize a preferred chain version. It adds that Solana describes a smaller superminority threshold for stake control and references a Nakamoto coefficient of 10 as of Aug. 5, linking validator concentration to potential network voting disruption.
