China deploys drones, AI forecasting as Typhoon Dolphin nears landfall
Authorities suspended 162 ferry routes and halted 193 construction projects on the water in Zhejiang as Typhoon Dolphin entered its 48-hour alert window.
China has activated extensive preparations for the landfall of Typhoon Dolphin, the fourth typhoon to hit the country this summer, with coastal provinces deploying drones to patrol over the sea and mobilizing new forecasting technology, according to SCMP Economy.
By Friday morning, the National Meteorological Centre said the storm was about 820 km from China’s east coast and expected to make landfall from Sunday afternoon to Monday morning between Zhejiang and northern Fujian. The agency maintained a yellow alert, warning of strong wind and rain, and said the typhoon could shift west or northwest after reaching land.
Authorities also said an artificial intelligence forecasting system at the National Marine Environmental Forecasting Centre could improve predictions of the typhoon’s route, strength and landfall factors over the next 240 hours. CCTV reported residents inland should take precautions as the storm’s large wind radius could bring heavy impacts beyond the coastline.
In Zhejiang, CCTV said a level 2 emergency response was launched, with authorities halting 162 ferry routes and 193 construction projects on the water, while docking 474 ships and keeping 15 tow boats on standby. The report also warned that multiple provinces could see heavy rain and urged people to monitor flash flood alerts.
