China tests quantum technologies at a power substation to improve reliability

Global electricity grids are under increasing strain as power flows become more complex with intermittent generation and surging demand tied to the artificial intelligence boom, OilPrice notes.

The outlet says managing variable inflows and outflows of electricity requires expanding and modernizing grids, citing U.S. Department of Energy language that grid upgrades can reduce outage frequency and duration and improve recovery after service interruptions.

OilPrice adds that China is exploring quantum technologies for grid resilience. A team of researchers is working on an exploratory project at a substation in Hefei, Anhui province.
