Crypto PACs spend $1.5M backing state races after Michigan primary loss
FEC filings show the PAC affiliates spent on ads ahead of Aug. 18 primaries in Florida, Alaska and Wyoming, after a Michigan loss tied to Protect Progress spending more than $2 million into the race.
Crypto-related political action committee affiliates reported spending more than $1.5 million on media for four House and Senate races ahead of Aug. 18 primary elections, according to Federal Election Commission filings cited by Cointelegraph.
Two groups affiliated with crypto company-backed PAC Fairshake, Defend American Jobs and Protect Progress, spent a combined $1.5 million on ads supporting candidates in Florida, Alaska and Wyoming after a primary loss in Michigan earlier in the week.
In Alaska’s at-large congressional district, Defend American Jobs reported spending more than $500,000 to back the re-election of Representative Nick Begich. The Super PAC also spent about the same amount on Republican candidate Sydney Gruters in Florida’s 16th district, and on Representative Harriet Hageman in Wyoming for a Senate seat currently held by Cynthia Lummis, with both states also holding primaries on Aug. 18.
The reported expenditures follow a Michigan primary loss for a Protect Progress-backed candidate in the 13th district, where Democratic incumbent Shri Thanedar lost to State Representative Donavan McKinney after Protect Progress poured more than $2 million into media backing the challenger. Cointelegraph also reports that Protect Progress spent more than $50,000 on the Democratic side for the re-election of Lois Frankel in Florida’s 23rd district.
