ECB launches public survey on new euro banknote design shortlist

The ECB opened an online survey on 10 shortlisted proposals, with responses accepted until September 21, 2026, and a final decision expected by year end.

The European Central Bank unveiled the shortlisted design proposals for a new series of euro banknotes and opened a public online survey across Europe to collect feedback. The ECB said the proposals are built around two themes, “European culture” and “Rivers and birds,” with matching motifs chosen for each theme. ECB President Christine Lagarde said the banknotes are more than a payment tool, describing them as a tangible expression of Europe’s identity.

The ECB said the shortlist follows an EU-wide design contest that drew more than 1,200 applications from graphic designers. An independent jury of 21 experts selected 10 design proposals for the survey, drawing on input from specialists including graphic design, communication, neuroscience and history.

The ECB said its Governing Council is expected to take the final decision around the end of the year, using a combination of jury conclusions, a technical assessment, and the results of both public and parallel citizen surveys. The selected design will undergo further development and testing before production, and the ECB expects the new banknotes to enter circulation in subsequent years, with the previous series continuing to circulate alongside them.
