HDI Global seeks $600,000-plus from carriers over missing Alabama generator
The insurer filed suit in Houston federal court on Aug. 5, 2026, alleging a freight handoff left a shaft generator short of its final leg from Freeport, Texas to Muscle Shoals, Alabama.
HDI Global Insurance Company has filed a lawsuit in Houston federal court seeking more than $600,000 after it says a shaft generator arrived in Texas but never completed its final shipment to Alabama. According to the complaint, the generator was intended to travel from a Texas port to Muscle Shoals, Alabama, with industrial coverage flowing through HDI after the shipment was lost.
Insurance Business reports that HDI alleges Voith Hydro Inc. was insured for the loss and that HDI paid the company, leaving HDI subrogated to pursue the responsible carriers. The suit names two defendants, Hansa Meyer Global Transport GmbH & Co. KG, described as a German freight forwarder, and Zimone Trucking LLC, described as a Kansas interstate motor carrier.
The complaint traces the route, saying the generator, called the Cargo, shipped from Italy toward Muscle Shoals in September and October 2025. HDI alleges it was handed over in good order and condition when transferred for transportation, but the filing does not specify what happened to the generator after it was discharged in Freeport, Texas.
HDI invokes the Carmack Amendment under the Interstate Commerce Act, which sets a motor carrier's liability for lost or damaged goods in interstate shipping, and says the amount in controversy exceeds $10,000 per bill of lading. It seeks $603,870.72 against each carrier, plus costs, interest, and reasonable attorney's fees, and the allegations have not yet been tested in court.
