Iran-Oman shipping draft proposal raises Strait of Hormuz risk premium
The draft plan would cap use of US and Israeli vessels, require compensation for countries labeled hostile, and levy 20% of cargo value in penalties for violations, according to reporting.
Risk sentiment around the Strait of Hormuz firmed as a draft Iran-Oman proposal came under review in Iran, outlining stricter conditions for commercial shipping than markets had expected.
The plan includes limits on US and Israeli vessels, compensation requirements for countries deemed hostile, and penalties equal to 20% of cargo value for violations, while reports that Iran struck targets in the strait added further pressure, Action Forex said.
In broader macro signals that can feed currency and rates expectations, Action Forex pointed to strong July export growth in China at 23.9% year over year, and weaker household spending in Japan that fell 3.3% year over year in June, marking seven straight months of contraction.
On the US side, the outlet cited the July Challenger Report showing 33,429 announced layoffs, the lowest level since July 2024, and said Fed communication was also in focus, with Chair Warsh expected to stick to a no-guidance policy and later explain his framework at Jackson Hole on 22 August.
