Malaysian court delays ex-PM Ismail Sabri’s graft charges for health reasons

The former prime minister missed the Kuala Lumpur hearing after being hospitalized for a heart condition, with his lawyer saying he was set for a pacemaker procedure.

A Malaysian court deferred corruption charges against former prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob after he was unable to attend a hearing in a multimillion-dollar case, following hospitalization for a heart condition, according to SCMP Economy.

Ismail Sabri, 66, faces corruption allegations tied to alleged abuse of power and money laundering, after anti-corruption police arrested a senior aide and several others last February.

Police said they seized about 170 million ringgit, or US$41.5 million, in cash held in different denominations, and 16kg of gold ingots estimated to be worth 7 million ringgit, from an office investigators believed was used as a safe house by his aide.

His lawyer, Amer Hamzah Arshad, said Ismail Sabri was taken to hospital the previous day while being questioned by anti-corruption officers, and that he would undergo a pacemaker procedure that afternoon, with a brief admission for treatment reported two weeks earlier after a fall.
