UN race for secretary-general enters final stage amid high stakes
The next secretary-general is expected to be installed by year end for a five-year term, as the Security Council’s P5 seeks consensus.
The race to become the 10th secretary-general of the United Nations has entered a final stage, with attention focused on whether the incoming leader can stabilize an organization widely described as financially strapped, structurally flawed, and hindered by infighting.
According to reporting by SCMP Economy, Richard Gowan, global issues and institutions director at the International Crisis Group, said the stakes for the UN are exceptionally high and that the next secretary-general may make or break the organization.
SCMP Economy also notes that once the UN’s P5 reaches a consensus, other members typically follow, and the new secretary-general is usually in place for the five-year term by year end.
